Electricity is the sneaky bill. Unlike heating, there's rarely one big obvious culprit, it's dozens of small draws happening at once. The upside is that lots of small fixes stack up fast, and almost none of them change how you actually live.


1. Kill the standby drain

“Phantom load”, the power devices use while switched off but still plugged in, is the classic invisible cost. TVs, games consoles, set-top boxes, chargers and speakers all sip electricity around the clock. 2. Switch to LED lighting

If you still have any old incandescent or halogen bulbs, this is one of the easiest wins going. LED bulbs use far less electricity, roughly 75–90% less than old incandescents, and last many times longer, so you replace them far less often. They've become cheap, and the payback is usually well under a year.

Don't wait for old bulbs to blow. Swapping them now starts saving immediately, especially in the rooms where the lights are on longest. And the simplest habit of all still counts: turn lights off when you leave a room.


3. Do your laundry the smart way

Your washing machine's biggest energy cost isn't spinning the drum, it's heating the water. That's why a few laundry habits make a real difference:

Wash at 30°C

Modern detergents work well at low temperatures. Dropping from 40°C to 30°C cuts the energy used to heat the water, and most everyday loads come out just as clean.

Run full loads

A half-empty machine uses almost as much energy as a full one. Wait for a full load, or use a half-load/eco setting if you can't.

Air-dry instead of tumble-drying

Tumble dryers are among the hungriest appliances in the house. Drying on a rack or line whenever you can avoids that cost entirely.


4. Kitchen and appliance habits

The kitchen is full of things that heat, and heating is where electricity gets expensive. A few tweaks:

•     Only boil the water you need. Kettles are power-hungry; don't fill it for one cup.

•     Run the dishwasher full, and use its eco mode, it heats less water.

•     Use lids on pans. Food heats faster, using less energy.

•     Microwave small portions, far more efficient than the oven for small jobs.

•     Keep the fridge seal clean. A good seal means the fridge works less hard.

5. Smart meters and off-peak tariffs

A smart meter doesn't cut your usage by itself, but it shows you where your electricity goes, which makes it much easier to change habits. The real saving comes if you pair it with a time-of-use (off-peak) tariff: electricity is cheaper at certain hours, so running the dishwasher, washing machine or an EV charger overnight can cost noticeably less.
