Ask yourself four questions about each appliance in your home.
How often do you use it?
Appliances you use every day, such as the fridge freezer, washing machine and oven, cause the most disruption when they fail.
What would it cost to replace?
American-style fridge freezers, range cookers and built-in appliances are expensive to replace and to fit.
How old is it?
Appliances must be under 10 years old when cover starts. Those under 6 years old qualify for a full replacement if they can't be repaired. Guarantee vs insurance explained.

A smaller appliance like a microwave or cooker hood can take you to the next discount tier.

Each appliance must be under 10 years old when cover starts, and proof of purchase is needed for each one. Excess: £250 in the first 45 days (£125 for further claims from that period), then £0 for appliances under 6 years old or £40 for those 6 years old or more. American-style fridge freezers and range cookers have a £250 excess for the first 6 months. Cover is for homes in mainland England, Wales and Scotland.

There's no limit on the number of appliances, and discounts of up to 30% apply automatically.

How many appliances can I cover on one policy?
As many as you like. There's no limit on the number of appliances you can insure on one Smart Cover policy, and no limit on the number of claims.
Which appliances can I include?
Our online quote covers 16 types of appliance: washing machines, tumble dryers, washer dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, fridge freezers, American-style fridge freezers, wine coolers, ovens, cookers, hobs, cooker hoods, microwaves, warming drawers and vacuum cleaners. Each appliance must be under 10 years old when cover starts.
Can I mix kitchen and laundry appliances on one policy?
Yes. You can combine appliances from any category, such as cooking, laundry, refrigeration and others, on one policy, and they all count towards your multi-appliance discount.
Is one multi-appliance policy better than separate policies?
For many households with 3 or more appliances, it's simpler and cheaper. One policy means one payment, one renewal date and one claims line, and you get a discount of 20% to 30%. Separate single-appliance policies don't get the multi-appliance discount.
What does multi-appliance insurance cover?
It covers mechanical and electrical breakdown, and accidental damage where shown on your Certificate of Insurance, up to £500 per claim. The limit includes the call-out, labour, parts and VAT. If an appliance is beyond economical repair, Smart Cover contributes towards a replacement based on the appliance's age when cover started: full replacement up to its declared value if it's under 6 years old, or 50% if it's 6 to 10 years old.
What isn't covered?
Pre-existing faults, routine maintenance and cleaning, wear and tear, manufacturer recalls and generic manufacturing defects, deliberate damage or misuse, and pre-owned or second-hand appliances (unless bought from an approved supplier) aren't covered. Nor are delivery, installation or removal of a replacement, or the food and contents of fridges and freezers. Your policy documents give the full list.
Is there an age limit for appliances?
Yes. Each appliance must be under 10 years old when your cover starts. Appliances under 6 years old can get a full replacement if they're beyond economical repair, and those aged 6 to 10 years get a 50% contribution. If an appliance's age can't be confirmed with proof of purchase, it's covered for repair only.
Is there an excess?
Yes, depending on when you claim and the appliance's age:
- £250 for a claim in the first 45 days of your policy (£125 for further claims from incidents in that period)
- After 45 days: £0 for appliances under 6 years old, or £40 for appliances 6 years old or more
- American-style fridge freezers and range cookers: £250 for the first 6 months, then the standard rules apply
Do I need proof of purchase for every appliance?
Yes. You need proof of purchase for each appliance you add to your policy, and you'll be asked for it when you make a claim.
Can I insure appliances that came with my home?
Usually not. Pre-owned and second-hand appliances aren't covered unless bought from an approved supplier, and you need proof of purchase for each appliance. If appliances were left by a previous owner, contact Smart Cover before adding them to your policy.
How do I make a claim on a multi-appliance policy?
Call Smart Cover on 03333 449 559 (Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm), or claim through our website or app. Tell us which appliance has the fault, and we'll try to diagnose it over the phone first. Engineer visits are arranged Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. If you pay monthly or quarterly, the rest of your annual premium becomes due when you claim.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. You can pay for Smart Cover multi-appliance insurance monthly or annually.
Can I cancel my policy?
Yes. If you cancel within 14 days and haven't claimed, you'll get a full refund. After 14 days, monthly and quarterly payers don't get a refund, and annual payers get a pro-rata refund minus a £25 admin fee. No refund is given if you've made a claim.
Where is multi-appliance insurance available?
Smart Cover appliance insurance is available for homes in mainland England, Wales and Scotland. It isn't available in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
What is the Smart Cover Price Match Promise?
