What does electrical emergency cover actually protect?

A sudden loss of power leaves you without lighting, heating controls, fridges, freezers and everything else that keeps a home running. And an electrical fault can be a genuine safety risk, not the kind of thing you want to leave until morning.

Standard home insurance doesn't always help with an internal electrical breakdown, so the emergency call-out can fall to you. Electrical emergency cover is designed to take the stress and cost out of an eligible fault, with quick access to an approved electrician.

How electrical cover helps

When an eligible internal electrical emergency strikes, cover is there to get your power back safely.

Internal breakdown

Sudden breakdown of your home's internal electrics.

Loss of supply

A sudden loss of the electricity supply within your home.

Unsafe faults

Faults that make part of the home unsafe to use.

Emergency electrician

Access to an approved electrician, nationwide.

Exact benefits, claim limits and exclusions depend on your plan and policy wording; always check before you buy.

What's included, and what isn't

Every claim is assessed against your policy terms, chosen plan, excess and claim limits. Here's the general picture on electrical cover.

Typically included

  • Sudden internal electrical breakdown
  • A sudden loss of electricity supply within the home
  • A fault that makes part of the property unsafe to use
  • Access to an approved emergency electrician
  • Parts and labour on eligible repairs
  • Unlimited annual claims, £500 (Essential) or £1,000 (Premium) per claim limit

Not included

  • Any event that is not an emergency
  • General maintenance and routine electrical work
  • Upgrades, rewiring and planned improvements
  • Appliance replacement and non-urgent faults
  • Pre-existing faults and wear and tear
  • Anything specifically excluded under your policy

Cover levels vary by plan. Always refer to the comparison table, the policy Terms & Conditions and the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) before buying.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

An electrical emergency is usually a sudden fault that needs urgent attention because it affects the safety or essential use of your home. Here are the kinds of issues cover is designed for.

Total loss of power

A sudden loss of the electricity supply within your home, leaving you without lighting, heating controls and appliances.

Repeated tripping

A circuit that keeps tripping the consumer unit can point to a fault that needs a qualified electrician to investigate.

Burning smell or sparks

A burning smell, scorching or sparks from a socket, switch or the consumer unit is a safety risk and should be treated urgently.

Dead sockets & circuits

Sockets or circuits that have suddenly stopped working, affecting essential parts of your home.

Consumer unit fault

A fault at the fuse board / consumer unit that stops it protecting or supplying your home safely.

Out-of-hours faults

An urgent electrical fault at night or over a weekend, when an emergency electrician is hardest to arrange.

Signs of danger? Safety first

  1. Burning smell, smoke, sparks or a shock? Treat it as an emergency. If there's a fire or someone is hurt, call 999.
  2. If it's safe to do so, switch off at the consumer unit (the main switch on your fuse board) to isolate the power.
  3. Don't touch anything wet or use water on an electrical fire, and keep people and pets clear.
  4. A power cut affecting your street is your network operator's responsibility. Call the free national power-cut line on 105. For an eligible fault inside your home, call us on 03333 449 559 to start a claim.

How to make an electrical cover claim

If you have an eligible internal electrical emergency under Smart Home or Smart Home Plus, help is four steps away.

  1. 01

    Call us

Ring our helpline on 03333 449 559 and describe the electrical fault and what's affected.

  2. 02

    We assess

We check the fault against your plan, excess, limits and terms to confirm it's covered.

  3. 03

    Electrician booked

An approved electrician from our nationwide network is arranged to attend your home.

  4. 04

    Power restored

The eligible repair is carried out so your home is safe and running again.

Frequently asked questions

What is electrical emergency cover?

Electrical emergency cover helps with certain sudden electrical breakdowns or faults in your home that need urgent attention. It is designed to support UK homeowners when an electrical issue affects the safe use of the home's electricity supply.

With Smart Cover, internal electricals cover sits within a wider home emergency plan that can also include boiler, heating, plumbing and drainage support. It does not usually cover routine maintenance, upgrades or non-emergency work, and is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

An electrical emergency is usually a sudden electrical fault that needs urgent attention because it affects the safety or essential use of your home. Examples may include a serious internal electrical breakdown, a sudden loss of electricity supply within the home, or a fault that makes part of the property unsafe to use.

Issues such as routine maintenance, planned electrical work, appliance replacement or non-urgent faults may not be covered. The exact definition depends on your policy wording.

Which plans include electrical cover?

Internal electricals cover is included from the Smart Home plan (£10.90 a month) and the Smart Home Plus plan (£12.90 a month). The Smart Boiler and Smart Heating plans focus on your boiler and heating and don't include electrical cover.

Check the comparison table to see exactly what each plan includes before choosing.

Does home emergency cover include electrical issues?

Some home emergency plans can include electricity, but it depends on the plan you choose. Wider plans may include internal electricals alongside boiler breakdown, central heating, plumbing and drainage; more basic plans may focus on other systems.

Before choosing, check whether electrical breakdown cover is included, what types of electrical emergencies are covered, and what exclusions apply.

Is there a limit to the number of claims I can make?

Smart Cover's electrical emergency cover options include an unlimited annual claim limit, with a per-claim limit of £500 on Essential cover or £1,000 on Premium cover. This means the number of claims may not be capped in the same way as the value of each approved claim.

Each claim is still assessed against your chosen plan, excess, policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so check your policy documents so you understand how the limits apply.

Do I need a separate policy for electrical faults?

You may not need a separate policy if electrical faults are already included within your home emergency cover. Some broader plans include internal electricals as part of a wider package with boiler, heating, plumbing and drainage support.

Check your existing home insurance and home emergency documents first, so you avoid overlap and understand whether electrical emergencies are already covered. If your current policy doesn't include electrical cover, you may need a plan that does.

How much does electrical emergency cover typically cost in the UK?

The cost varies by provider, cover level, excess and whether it's included within a wider home emergency plan. Plans covering only limited areas may cost less than wider policies that include boiler, heating, plumbing, drainage and internal electricals.

With Smart Cover, plans including internal electricals start from £10.90 a month. Rather than looking at price alone, compare what's included, the per-claim limit, exclusions and how claims are handled.

What is the best electrical emergency cover?

The best electrical emergency cover depends on your home, your budget and the level of support you want. When comparing options, look at what's included, such as internal electricals, access to an emergency electrician, claim limits and excess options, and whether the cover forms part of a wider home emergency plan.

No single policy is right for every homeowner. The most suitable option is the one that matches your needs and clearly explains its terms, limits and exclusions.
