Accessibility statement
We want everyone to be able to use our website and services, whatever their ability, device or circumstances. Here's how we do that, and how to get help if something doesn't work for you.
You can adjust the site your way with zoom, colour changes or a screen reader. You can ask for documents in large print or another format. If you're deaf or hard of hearing, use Relay UK by dialling 18001 then 03333 449 559 (home emergencies: 18001 then 03333 449 247). If you find a problem, email us and we'll fix it.
Committed to accessibility for all
Smart Cover is committed to making smart-cover.co.uk, our app and our customer service accessible to as many people as possible. That includes people with sight, hearing, mobility, cognitive or learning difficulties, and anyone using older devices or a slow connection.
We're continually improving the website and welcome your feedback on anything we could do better.
Works on any device
Our website adapts to your screen, so it works on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Content reflows to fit narrow screens without you having to scroll sideways, and you can rotate your device to portrait or landscape.
Changing the text size
You can make text bigger or smaller using your browser. Pages can be zoomed up to 400% without losing content.
| Device | Zoom in | Zoom out | Reset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) | Ctrl + + | Ctrl + - | Ctrl + 0 |
| Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) | Cmd + + | Cmd + - | Cmd + 0 |
| Phone or tablet | Pinch to zoom, or change the text size in your device's display or accessibility settings. | ||
Colours and contrast
We use colour combinations with strong contrast so text is easy to read, and we don't rely on colour alone to give information.
If you prefer different colours, you can change them on your device, for example by turning on dark mode, high contrast mode (Windows), or colour filters and inverted colours (Mac, iPhone and Android).
Assistive technology and other options
Our website is built to work with the tools many people rely on:
Screen readers
Such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver and TalkBack, using headings, labelled links and form fields.
Keyboard only
Move through pages withTab, Shift + Tab and Enter, with a visible focus outline.
Voice control
Such as Dragon, Voice Control (Apple) and Voice Access (Android).
Reduced motion
We respect your device's reduced-motion setting and avoid flashing content.
For step-by-step help making your own device easier to use, visit AbilityNet's free My Computer My Way guides.
Links
We write link text that makes sense on its own, so you know where a link goes without reading the words around it. We avoid vague links like "click here", and we tell you when a link opens a document or another website.
Plain English
Insurance can be complicated, so we work hard to explain our cover clearly. We use plain English, short sentences and clear headings, and explain any technical or insurance terms we need to use. Every insurance policy also comes with an Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) that summarises the cover in a standard, easy-to-compare format.
Extra support when you need it
Accessibility goes beyond the website. If your health, circumstances or a disability make it harder to deal with us, tell us and we'll adapt how we help you.
- Documents in other formats: ask for policy documents and letters in large print or another format that suits you.
- Relay UK: if you're deaf, hard of hearing or have speech difficulties, call us via Relay UK by dialling 18001 03333 449 559 from a textphone or the Relay UK app. To report a home emergency, dial 18001 03333 449 247. If you have motor breakdown cover, you can also text our breakdown team on 07537 404890.
- Choose how we contact you: phone, email, post or the Smart Cover app.
- Someone to speak for you: with your permission, a family member, carer or friend can manage your policy with us on your behalf.
- More time and extra care: we can slow things down, repeat information or arrange a callback at a better time.
Known limitations and exceptions
We know some parts of our website may not yet be fully accessible:
- Older content: some older blog posts and images may not yet have full text descriptions or the clearest headings. We're updating these over time.
- PDF documents: some older policy documents and IPIDs are PDFs that may not work well with screen readers. Ask us for an accessible version.
- Third-party features: some tools we embed, such as review widgets and payment pages, are provided by other companies and we can't fully control how accessible they are.
- External websites: links to other websites, including regulators and review sites, are covered by those sites' own accessibility policies.
If any of these stop you doing something, contact us and we'll help you another way.
Standards and testing
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the internationally recognised standard for accessible websites. We're working to make sure all pages meet this standard, and we review the website regularly to find and fix problems.
We also make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers, as required by the Equality Act 2010.
