Frequently asked questions
What is central heating?
Central heating is a system that heats your home from one main heat source, usually a boiler.
In many UK homes, the boiler heats water and sends it through pipes to radiators around the property. The system may also include controls, thermostats, valves, pumps and pipework.
A central heating system is different from using separate heaters in each room because it is designed to warm several areas of the home from one connected system.
How is central heating cover provided?
Central heating cover is provided through a selected home emergency cover plan that includes heating-related protection.
Depending on the plan, cover may include emergency boiler breakdown, internal gas supply pipe and the domestic central heating system. Some wider plans may also include plumbing, electricals, drainage and an optional annual boiler service.
If you need to claim, the provider will assess the issue against your policy terms. Any approved repair support will depend on your chosen plan, claim limits, excess and exclusions.
Do I need central heating cover?
Central heating cover may be worth considering if you want support with certain emergency heating repairs in your home.
A central heating system can be costly to repair if something breaks down unexpectedly. Cover can help with eligible issues linked to your heating system, boiler breakdown or internal gas supply pipe, depending on the plan you choose.
It is not a replacement for routine maintenance or servicing. Before buying, check what is included, what is excluded, any excess, and the claim limits that apply. Cover is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.
What is the average cost of a new central heating system?
The cost of a new central heating system can vary widely, so there is no single average price that applies to every home.
The final cost usually depends on factors such as:
- The size of your property
- The type of boiler you choose
- Whether new radiators are needed
- The amount of pipework required
- Heating controls and thermostats
- The complexity of the installation
If you are replacing or upgrading your system, it is sensible to get quotes from qualified heating engineers. Central heating cover is different from a new installation policy and is usually designed to help with eligible emergency repairs, subject to policy terms.
Is 22 degrees ok for central heating?
Setting central heating to 22°C may feel comfortable for some homes, but it can use more energy than lower settings.
Many UK households set their thermostat between 18°C and 21°C, depending on comfort, health needs, insulation and the weather. Older people, young children or anyone with certain health conditions may need a warmer home.
You should choose a safe and comfortable temperature for your household. If your heating struggles to reach the set temperature, it may be worth checking whether your boiler, radiators or controls need attention.
What is the difference between central heating and normal heating?
Central heating heats several rooms from one main system, while “normal heating” can refer to any method used to warm a space.
For example, central heating often uses a boiler, pipework and radiators to heat the whole home. Other forms of heating may include electric heaters, storage heaters, gas fires or room-by-room heating units.
Central heating cover usually focuses on eligible faults with the connected heating system, depending on the policy. It does not normally mean every type of heater in the home is covered.
Will home emergency cover include my boiler?
Home emergency cover may include your boiler if the plan you choose includes emergency boiler breakdown.
In case of Smart Cover central heating, some plans may include emergency boiler breakdown, internal gas supply pipe and optional annual boiler service. Wider plans may also include the domestic central heating system and other home emergency areas.
Boiler-related claims are subject to policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions. For example, exclusions may apply for general maintenance, certain non-emergency issues, limescale or sludge-related problems, and boilers that have not been serviced as required.
What is the 30-minute heating rule?
The 30-minute heating rule is a general energy-saving idea, not a formal insurance rule.
It usually refers to setting your heating to come on around 30 minutes before you need the house warm, then turning it off before you leave or go to bed. The aim is to use heating only when it is needed, rather than leaving it running for long periods.
How well this works depends on your home’s insulation, boiler, radiators, thermostat settings and daily routine. It does not affect whether a heating issue is covered under central heating cover, which depends on your policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.
