Corporate social responsibility

Doing the right thing by our people, our customers and everyone who works with us. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves and our partners to.

In short

We offer equal opportunity to everyone, with no discrimination on any protected characteristic. Our engineers, suppliers and partners must meet the same standards of fairness, honesty and safety we do. We pay men and women equally for equal work, and review pay every year.

Our approach

Responsible in everything we do

Smart Cover has protected UK homes since 2013. As an Appointed Representative of an FCA-authorised firm, putting customers first isn't optional, and we apply the same thinking to how we treat our team, our partners and our communities.

Our people

A fair, inclusive workplace where everyone can progress.

Our customers

Fair value, clear information and extra care for customers in vulnerable circumstances.

Our partners

Working only with engineers and suppliers who share our standards.

Our planet

Repair over replace, and cutting our own footprint. See our Sustainability Plan.

Policy 1

Diversity & Inclusion Policy

We want Smart Cover to be a place where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where people are judged on their skills and contribution alone. This policy applies to all employees, job applicants, contractors and anyone acting on our behalf.

Our commitment

We will not discriminate, directly or indirectly, on the grounds of any characteristic protected by the Equality Act 2010:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage & civil partnership
  • Pregnancy & maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

In our workplace

  • Fair recruitment: clear job criteria, inclusive job adverts and consistent interviews.
  • Reasonable adjustments for disabled candidates and colleagues, at every stage.
  • Equal access to training, development and promotion.
  • Flexible working requests considered fairly for everyone.
  • Zero tolerance of bullying, harassment and victimisation, including sexual harassment, which we take reasonable steps to prevent.

For our customers

  • Accessible service: phone, email, post, Relay UK and our app, so customers can reach us the way that suits them. See our Accessibility Statement.
  • Vulnerable customers: we identify and support customers in vulnerable circumstances, in line with the FCA's Consumer Duty.
  • Clear communication: plain-English documents, and alternative formats on request.
  • Fair outcomes for every customer, regardless of background.

Responsibility

Our directors have overall responsibility for this policy. Managers make sure it is followed day to day, and every colleague is expected to uphold it. Breaches are treated as a disciplinary matter.

Policy 2

Third Party Code of Conduct

Our customers judge us by everyone who acts in our name. This code applies to our engineers and contractors, suppliers, affiliates, introducers, comparison sites and commercial partners. We make it part of our agreements and check that it's followed.

AreaWhat we expect
Treating customers fairlyBe courteous, honest and respectful in every visit, call and message. Take extra care with customers in vulnerable circumstances.
Qualifications & safetyHold the right qualifications and registrations for the work (for example Gas Safe registration for gas work), carry suitable insurance and follow health and safety law.
Equality & respectNever discriminate against or harass customers, our staff or anyone else, in line with our Diversity & Inclusion Policy.
Data protectionUse customer personal data only for the job we've asked you to do, keep it secure and follow UK GDPR. See our Privacy Policy.
Honest marketingAffiliates and introducers must only use approved wording, and must never make misleading claims about our cover or prices. Promotions must follow FCA rules and the ASA's advertising codes.
Anti-bribery & fraudNever offer or accept bribes, inducements or improper payments. Never inflate or fabricate a claim, invoice or repair. (Bribery Act 2010)
Human rightsNo modern slavery, forced or child labour anywhere in your business or supply chain. See our Modern Slavery Statement.
EnvironmentRepair rather than replace where it's sensible, and dispose of old parts and appliances responsibly.
Respect for our team, too. We expect customers and third parties to treat our colleagues with respect. We don't tolerate abuse, threats or harassment of our staff or engineers. We may end a call or visit where this happens and, in line with our policy terms, we may cancel a policy in cases of abusive behaviour.
If standards aren't met: we will investigate and may suspend work, require improvements or end the relationship. Where the law has been broken, we may report it to the relevant authorities.
Policy 3

Gender Pay Gap Policy

We believe pay should reflect the job and the person's contribution, never their gender. Two ideas are worth separating:

Equal pay means men and women are paid the same for the same or equivalent work. This is a legal requirement under the Equality Act 2010, and we meet it.
The gender pay gap is the difference in average pay between all men and all women in an organisation. It often reflects who holds which roles, and it is what we work to reduce.

What we do

  • Consistent pay structures: each role has a defined pay range, set on objective criteria.
  • Annual pay review by gender, so any unexplained gap is found and corrected.
  • Fair progression: transparent promotion criteria and equal access to development.
  • Family-friendly working: support for maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption leave, and flexible working for parents and carers.
  • Balanced recruitment: gender-neutral job adverts and, where possible, mixed interview panels.
Gender pay gap reporting. UK employers with 250 or more employees must publish their gender pay gap figures each year on the government's Gender pay gap service. We review our own pay data every year regardless of size.
Raising a concern

Seen something that isn't right?

If you're a customer, colleague or partner and you believe any of these standards has been broken, please tell us. Concerns are handled confidentially, and nobody will be treated unfairly for raising one in good faith.

Whistleblowing

Staff can also report to the FCA's whistleblowing service.
