Fridge Freezer Problems

3 of the more common fridge freezer problems include excessive noise, inefficient cooling and faulty icemaker.

3 Fridge Freezer Problems To Know About

Today it is impossible to imagine life without a refrigerator and freezer. Almost every home has one, whether it is in the form of a single fridge-freezer unit or it is in the form of two separate units for the fridge and freezer.

Anybody who owns a frost-free fridge freezer will attest to the fact that these devices are trouble-free most of the time. There are rare occasions however when problems could crop up. Here are 3 common fridge-freezer breakdown problems you should know about and how you can fix them.

#1 The device is noisy

All fridge freezers make some amount of noise when they are running. These sounds are from the compressor motor, gas circulating in the pipes and defrosting air movements. If you leave your appliance running 24/7 as most of us do, you will hear a constant gentle humming sound in the background. It’s normal. Ignore it.

However, if you hear cracking, groaning or whirring sounds, they could indicate that there is a problem. Some of the common reasons for these sounds could be because of:

  • Failure of the fan motor
  • The thermostat has failed resulting in buildup of ice
  • The fan clipping the ice that has resulted from the buildup
  • Partial or complete obstruction of the air channels

If you suspect any of the above problems, do not try to fix them yourself. Fridge freezers run on compressed gas and inexperienced DIY trial-and-error solutions are very dangerous. For safety reasons, call a professional, trained technician to identify and solve the problem.

#2 The fridge, freezer or both units are not cooling

This could be due to a number of reasons, all of which require a professional to deal with. When the fridge or freezer are not cooling, it could be due to one or more of these problems:

  • There is a fault with the fan motor
  • The compressor is weak or some part is not working as efficiently
  • There is a buildup of ice, which obstructs the fan from moving freely
  • There could be a failure of the thermostat or some electronic component.

#3 The icemaker has stopped working

It’s such a pleasure to just place your glass against the lever and get ice when you want to. It’s something you get used to when you own a fridge freezer with the icemaker feature. By and large, ice-making units are pretty reliable and rarely malfunction and when they do, it is usually due to something simple that can be easily fixed.

Usually when the icemaker stops producing ice, it is due to a defective water valve or because the filters are clogged and are blocking the inlet. The first thing you need to do is to check the ice tray. If the tray does not have any water in it, then it is most probably due to one of the reasons above. Resolving these problems is easy. You would need to either replace the faulty water valve or clean the filters and it should start working again.

If there is water in the tray and the unit is still not making ice, then the problem is more complex and you need to get a professional to sort it out.
