The oven parts cover protects
When one of these fails through a covered breakdown, an engineer can repair or replace the part, subject to your policy terms.
Heating elements
The top, base and grill elements that heat the oven, the most common reason an oven won't heat.
Fan motor
Circulates hot air in a fan oven. A failed fan causes uneven cooking or no heat.
Thermostat / sensor
Controls the temperature. A fault can leave the oven cold, or too hot, or unable to hold heat.
Controls & timer
The selector switch, programmer and clock. Faults can stop the oven starting or holding a setting.
Door & hinges
Hinges and the door mechanism. A failed hinge can stop the door closing and sealing heat in.
Door seal & light
The gasket that keeps heat in and the interior lamp, both covered against breakdown.
Oven faults we can help with
These are the breakdowns UK households search for most. If a covered fault causes any of these, an engineer can diagnose it.
Won't heat up
The most common oven fault, usually a failed heating element or thermostat.
Fan not working
A failed fan motor leaves a fan oven cooking unevenly, or not heating at all.
Tripping the electrics
A failed element can leak to earth and trip your fuse board whenever the oven is switched on.
Grill not working
A blown grill element means no top heat for grilling and browning.
Door won't close
A worn or broken hinge stops the door sealing, so the oven loses heat and cooks poorly.
Controls or display fault
A programmer, timer or control-board fault can stop the oven starting or holding a setting.
What a oven repair can cost
Most faults appear once the manufacturer's guarantee has ended, right when the bill lands on you.
Typical repair & replacement costs

The cost of buying and installing a new built-in oven if yours can't be economically repaired.
What cover gives you
Per claim towards repair or a like-for-like replacement, spreading the risk into an affordable regular payment instead of a large one-off bill.

Oven, cooker or hob: which do you need?
They sound similar but cover different appliances. Here's the quick guide.
Simple ways to prevent breakdowns
A little care keeps your oven heating evenly and helps avoid the faults that lead to a claim.
Clean grease regularly
Built-up grease can affect the fan and elements and become a fire risk.
Go easy on harsh cleaners
Aggressive oven cleaner on elements and seals can cause damage over time.
Don't line the base with foil
Foil on the floor of the oven can reflect heat and damage the element.
Check the door seal
A worn seal lets heat escape, making the oven work harder and cook unevenly.
Don't slam the door
Slamming wears the hinges and can crack the inner glass over time.
Let it cool before cleaning
Cleaning a hot oven risks damage to elements, glass and your hands.

Frequently asked questions
What is oven insurance?
Oven insurance is a policy that helps cover the cost of repairing or replacing your oven if it suffers a mechanical breakdown, electrical breakdown or accidental damage. If your oven can't be economically repaired, Smart Cover contributes towards a like-for-like replacement based on the specification of your original oven, up to £500 per claim.
How much does oven insurance cost?
Oven cover is priced per appliance, and you can save more by covering multiple appliances on one policy: 20% off for 3 or more, 25% off for 5 or more, and 30% off for 7 or more. You can pay monthly or annually, and a current offer protects 5 appliances for the price of 4 at £23.99 per month. Prices include all relevant taxes.
Does oven insurance cover an oven that won't heat up?
Yes, an oven that won't heat up or reach temperature is one of the most common claims, often caused by a failed heating element, thermostat or fan. If the cause is a covered mechanical or electrical breakdown, an engineer can diagnose and repair it, subject to your policy terms, conditions and limits. Faults from misuse or pre-existing issues are not covered.
Does it cover a broken element, thermostat or fan?
Cover applies to sudden mechanical and electrical breakdowns, which can include a failed heating element, thermostat, fan motor, selector switch or control board. An engineer diagnoses the covered fault and repairs it. Gradual wear, poor maintenance and pre-existing faults are excluded. Always check your policy terms.
Does oven insurance cover gas ovens as well as electric?
Cover is available for built-in electric and gas ovens against mechanical and electrical breakdown and accidental damage. Any gas work is carried out by a suitably qualified engineer. If you have a freestanding cooker with a hob, our cooker insurance may suit you better.
Can I insure an old oven?
Oven insurance is available for ovens up to 10 years old at policy inception. Within that range, cover for older ovens may be limited to repair-only or a reduced contribution towards a replacement, depending on the age of the item. Pre-owned, second-hand ovens and pre-existing faults are not covered, and proof of purchase is required.
Is oven insurance worth it?
The oven is one of the hardest-working appliances in the kitchen, and repairs can be costly, often £70 to £150 or more depending on the fault, while a new built-in oven can cost £250 to £600 or more. Insurance can be worth it if you'd rather spread that risk into an affordable regular payment and avoid a large one-off bill. Whether it suits you depends on your oven's age, condition and budget.
What's the difference between oven, cooker and hob insurance?
Oven insurance covers a built-in oven. Cooker insurance is for a freestanding cooker that combines an oven and hob in one unit. Hob and hood insurance covers a separate hob and extractor hood. You can cover several of these on one policy and unlock a multi-appliance discount.
How do I claim on my oven insurance?
Report the fault by calling 03333 449 559, using live online chat, or emailing us. The team is available 9am to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays. An engineer from our UK-wide network attends to repair your oven where possible, and an excess may apply depending on the oven's age and policy terms.
