Choosing a New Washing Machine - Tips and Advice

When you buy a new washing machine, remember that appliance insurance from Smart-Cover covers every brand for breakdowns and repairs.

Are you looking for a new washing machine? Not sure which to buy?  Do you want to know which are the most reliable? My own Zanussi washer/dryer is now almost 20 years old but I am not sure how much longer it will last. I found it by reading the Which Magazine guide to the best appliances at the time and it came with a free portable television which sadly did not last very long. In this article we are concentrating on washing machines and not washer/dryers, these are not covered in this article but watch this space!

What is the Best Time to Buy a Washing Machine

The best time to buy a washing machine is in September, October and January when shops want to get rid of last year’s stock so that they are able to advertise the new models - so if you can hold out until those months it may be worth it.

Most washing machines have the Energy rating A or above, such as A+, A++ or A+++. The EU regulations that came out in 2012 now make it illegal for anyone to sell a new one which is C or below. The A ratings mean that the machine uses less electricity and water than the old ones used to.

A quiet spin cycle is often near the top of a washing machine buyer’s list. Some spin cycles are so loud that nothing can be heard above the spin cycle noise, so it is always a good idea to search for a quiet spin cycle in the reviews if this is your priority.

Some washing machines today can be badly built and unreliable so we have trawled through shopping sites for customer’s reviews and looked for washing machines which have been given 4+/5, 8+/10 or the maximum number of stars for reliability.

It's also worth making sure that whatever you choose  fits into any tight spaces.

The list above is only for guidance, it makes sense to read reviews yourself and make your own mind up. Some recommended places to look for reviews are; amazon, which.co.uk, goodhousekeeping.com and Currys to name a few,
