The New Apple iPhone 8

At an official event in California, in its new ‘spaceship’ headquarters, in a theatre named after Steve Jobs and streamed only on Safari, Apple launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8s.  It also gave the details of the Apple iPhone X (pronounced ‘ten’ as in roman numerals).

What is special about the iPhone 8 and 8 plus?

On the Apple website page the iPhone 8 is put in a nutshell: “iPhone 8 introduces an all‑new glass design. The world’s most popular camera, now even better. The smartest, most powerful chip ever in an iPhone. Wireless charging that’s truly effortless and augmented reality experiences never before possible. iPhone 8. A new generation of iPhone.”

The glass back on the phone means that it also has easy wireless charging.  This is said by Apple to be the ‘most durable glass to be found on a smartphone’.

A few months ago, it was rumoured that the iPhone 8 would be a high-end special edition. However, that has not happened which is probably why they have brought out the iPhone X on the same day. This is because the iPhone X has many of the features which were mentioned in that rumour, such as facial recognition.

The iPhone 8 plus is a larger version of the iPhone 8.  The iPhone 8 is a slightly improved iPhone 7S with a better display, an updated camera and more power.  However, the battery is 8% smaller than the iPhone 7 but has a similar battery life.  This is because of the A11 high-performance Bionic processor which Apple claims to be more efficient than the A10.  The iPhone 8 and 8 plus both have fast battery charging which means that the battery can be charged to 50 per cent battery life in 30 minutes. The phones support the Qi charging wireless standard which is supported in most airports and many new cars, so this will be very useful. The phones are both water-resistant.

The camera is also improved in both phones.  The 12 megapixel f/1.8 camera has a ‘larger and faster’ sensor than the iPhone 7 so photographs will be even better with these phones.

How much do the iPhone 8 and 8 plus cost?

The iPhone 8 and 8s costs £699 and £799 for 64GB and £849 and £949 for 256 GB respectively. It comes in space grey, silver and gold colours (No Rose Gold?!!).  Apple may launch other colours in the future, as it did with the iPhone 7 and 7 plus being offered in red six months after the launch.

There are many contracts available from the various networks that include the iPhone 8 and 8s and if you would like to pre-order one of the phones go to an Apple Store, Apple website or via the IOS app.
