The New Samsung S8 & S8 plus have just launched and comes with an array of snazzy features and improvements that will make your head spin. See what’s new.

At the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus, which was billed as a new era of Smartphone Design, Justin Denison, Samsung’s Senior Vice President of Product Strategy explained the function and design of the phones. He said that the Galaxy S8 will fundamentally change how the phone is used by giving more screen size in a completely new form factor. The infinity display has an incredible end-to-end screen which spills over the phone sides forming a completely smooth continuous surface.

The entire front of the phone is pure pristine glass which flows seamlessly into the aluminium shell. Denison explained that they took a 5.8 inch piece of glass, 6.2 inch for the Galaxy S8 plus and they rounded the corners and curved the edges. The phone still feels comfortable and small in the hand. The curved edges increase the size of the display without sacrificing the comfortable grip. The phones interior was re-organised and that meant that the screen was wrapped over the entire front of the device. HDR content has been brought to mobile. Crisp realistic colours which are excellent for watching videos.

What happened to the home button?

To give more screen the home button is under the Infinity display.

What is the camera like?

It has a multi-frame processor which reduces noise and brightness. There is a selfie camera which has Smart Auto Focus which tracks faces so that everyone in the shot will be in focus. The front-facing camera is better than before. Water and dust resistant – use inside and outside without worrying about rain storms. There is Wireless charging and fast charging if the phone needs charging quickly other than the usual way.

You are now the password for your Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus

You don’t need to type a password – you are the password! The security of the phone is enabled with the iris scanner, it maps your iris and creates a unique digital signature. Face recognition is also used and is extremely fast. (The fingerprint scanner on back of phone now which is a little hard to reach and can take two hands to apply this. Also your finger may land on the camera lens which is close by so watch out for smears.)

A rival for Siri and Google Assistant?

The Samsung S8 and S8 plus now has a built-in Bixby which is very much like Siri for the iPhone or Google Assistant. It has a dedicated button for Bixby. For instance if you want to know information about a building you point the phone at the building and Bixby will tell you all about it or if you want to buy a particular item such as a bicycle or a handbag – find a picture of it and Bixby will let you know where it can be purchased.

What colours do I have a choice of for the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus?

Midnight black, Orchid grey, Coral blue, Maple gold and Arctic silver. Overall, the Samsung S8 and S8 plus are some of the best if not the best Smartphones launched this year – they have set the bar very high!
